M. Butterfly is an intriguing drama of sexual duplicity, deception and treason enriched with Puccini's familiar score.  Based on a true story of the affair between a former French Diplomat and a Chinese Opera Singer, the action spans over 20 years from Beijing in the 1960's to a trial in Paris in 1985.  David Henry Hwang's award winning play reflects some of the the action of the Opera Madame Butterfly but also gives us some interesting parrallels and reversals: East vs West.  Sexual Encounter.   Who is victim and who the oppressor?

Premiered at the National Theatre in Washington D.C. it then opened in Broadway a month later in 1988.  The production (which starred "Third Rock from the Sun's" John Lithgow) won a Tony for Best Play, the Outer Critics Award for Best Broadway Play and the Drama Desk Award for Best New Play.

The following year M. Butterfly opened in the West End starring Anthony Hopkins at the Shaftesbury Theatre.  Subsequent productions have featured a range of prominent leads from George Chakiris to Jeremy Irons.

There is a large cast & crew involved in this show, which runs from 22 to 29 July, 2000.
