 ‘Guys & Dolls’

Guys and Dolls, one of the well-known Broadway musicals, is set in the New York of the early 1950s, inhabited by gamblers, night-club performers, and Salvation Army members trying to cure the sins of the Times Square population.

The plot revolves around a bet made between gambler, Sky Masterson, and Nathan Detroit, the organiser of a floating crap-game. Sky bets Nathan that he can woo any doll Nathan chooses and take her to a romantic get-away. Nathan chooses straight-laced Sarah Brown of the Salvation Army.

The status of the bet, the crap-game and the end of the fourteen-year engagement of Nathan and his girl, Adelaide, results in confusion amidst great song and dance, featuring such well-known numbers as 'Sit Down You're Rocking The Boat' and 'Luck Be A Lady Tonight'.

GUYS AND DOLLS DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

10:30 - 12 November 2004
Cheltenham: A glitzy world of gamblers and nightclub performers is revealed at The Playhouse from tomorrow. The Playhouse Company recreates all the razzmatazz of 1940s New York in the classic musical Guys and Dolls.

The plot revolves around a bet made by a gambler, Sky Masterson, with Nathan Detroit, organiser of a dice game.

Sky bets Nathan that he can woo any girl and take her to a romantic getaway.

Nathan chooses straightlaced Sarah Brown of the Salvation Army.

The show is an all-singing, all-dancing musical which features choreography by Playhouse Company member Stuart Driscoll.

It's packed with well-remembered songs like Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat and I've Never Been in Love Before.

Director Sue Bennett said: "It's got some super numbers such as Luck Be a Lady. It's really good fun. The cast have enjoyed themselves and I certainly have. That's what it's all about.

"They are so enthusiastic and that will come across to the audience."

The 28-strong cast includes Mike Hennessy as Nathan Detroit, the part taken by Frank Sinatra in the film version. Carol Bowman has mastered the New York twang to play Adelaid, his girlfriend of 14 years.

Ben Perkins takes the role of Sky Masterson, made famous by Marlon Brando, and Sarah Roberts is Salvation Army girl Sarah Brown who saves their souls.

Sue says: "The one worry that I had was whether I'd have enough men turn up for the auditions, but I did.

"You need at least a dozen men for the show and there was no problem whatsoever."

The musical runs until next Saturday. Kathryn Cecil
