THE PLAYHOUSE THEATRE, BATH ROAD, CHELTENHAM, GL53 7HG

WARDROBE MANAGER

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Works with the Director and Set Designer to establish costume requirements for the production, and obtains costumes for the cast.

Assistants

Might require some assistants to help obtain/make costumes and to help during the run of the show if there are quick costume changes or repairs.

Specifically:

Read the script thoroughly making notes of specific references to costume.

Before rehearsals begin, meet with the Director and Designer to discuss requirements, period, costume changes etc.

When rehearsals begin, take measurements of all cast - not forgetting shoe size and hat size (if applicable).

Obtaining costumes:

First establish if the cast can provide anything - if the show is set in present day, they might well be able to provide most of what is required.  The Newsletter can also be used to ask for specific items.

Second, the Playhouse Company have an extensive wardrobe which might well meet your needs.  Our  Wardrobe Liaison will be happy to assist.

Third, costumes can be hired from various places: Cotswold Costumes in Nailsworth etc.  It is useful if the cast can go along (if possible) before hiring to ensure that costumes fit.

Watch some rehearsals to establish what the characters will need from their costumes, also to be aware of any quick-changes.

There will also be a Production Meeting set up with the Department Heads and possibly Committee reps  to discuss the budget (which will have been drawn up  by the Treasurer) where the team can agree costs and spending.  Please make out a chit of your expenses and attach your receipts as proof of purchase.  This can then be given to our Treasurer who will reimburse you - not forgetting petrol expense if you have to travel distances to get costumes.

Attend the Tech and Dress Rehearsals and watch from the auditorium to ensure costumes look good and fit well.   You will need to be backstage for every performance in case of costume repairs, quick-changes etc.  If you have an assistant, then they will be able to help fulfil this need.
