A
review here
"A fast, rowdy musical - lively
and melodious!" - New York Times
"The most lovable musical in
years." - New York Post
From the composer of Hello,
Dolly!, Mame, and La Cage Aux Folles comes an
exhilarating saga of the silent film era. The roller coaster love story of
Mack Sennett, the legendary director of comedy, and his greatest leading
lady, the comedienne Mabel Normand, is vividly brought to life in this
exciting, fast-paced musical. “Mack and Mabel” is considered by most
to be Jerry Herman's best score.
Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand were
the basis of this 1975 musical with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman.
It never really caught on despite the wonderful score. Some say it was
because of the faulty book, which was also nominated for a Tony Award, or
the fact Peters and Preston ranged a lot in age.
The news that The Playhouse
Company has got the rights to do this super show is still sinking in!
In the meantime, Sue Bennett is busy organising people for musical
direction, set design, stage management and all the usual team. There's a big
cast for this show, so
there'll be a good chance for everyone to get involved who wants to.
There needs to be a reasonable
budget for this show, so we've decided to put on a Matinee performance on
the final Saturday. That'll get the bum-count up a bit! Sue Bennett is
busy organising people for musical direction, set design, stage managing
and all the other people who are always needed on the team. If you can
help at all, tell us! Don't wait to be asked!
If you'd like to help on the props
team, then we'd like to hear from you. There'll be some good opportunities
to make some crafty and imaginative props, so get your double-sided tape
and yoghurt pots out...
The show runs from 8th to
15th April 2000.
