Celebration
by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall
21st -25th July 2010
Directed by Sue Bilbey
It
was supposed to be Christine and Bernard's wedding, but as with most weddings,
it seemed they were the last people to be considered when it came to the
arrangements. Rhoda and Edgar, the bride's parents are arguing about the
catering.
Then
there is Uncle Frank, whose transport arrangements are starting to be
unravelled. What with Edna, Christine's mother and her bad back and upset
stomach, Jack with his sarcastic remarks and Uncle Arthur more or less
permanently drunk, the stage is set for a lively evening.
The funeral reception, six months later, turns out to be just as lively, with a
newly pregnant Christine, and Stan and Irene just engaged. Then the deceased's
mistress May turns up - to say nothing of a rather drunk Army pal.
Anyone who has found themselves caught in either of these two great rituals will
recognise many of the characters as well as the truth within Keith Waterhouse
and Willis Hall's warmly human comedy.
